Brazil and the European Union have just signed an open-skies agreement. The agreement basically puts an end to any restriction on the establishment of new flights between both regions. Under the agreement, Brazilian airlines could theoretically fly to as many European airports as they wanted to. European Union airlines could do likewise on Brazil.

Due to the saturation of its airports, Såo Paulo is out of the agreement, at least until 2014. Brazilian civil aviation authorities want to consolidate other entry points to Brazil alternative to Guarulhos airport in São Paulo.

An open-skies agreement between Brazil and the United States had been closed at the end of 2010. From 2015 there won’t be any restrictions to flights between both regions. During the coming three years 28 new frequencies will be added each year.

In the case of the European Union, the end of restrictions will happen in 2014. Until then, there will be a 20% annual increase in frequencies.
