an end to Gol’s Smiles and American Airlines’ AAdvantage partnership
Gol is keeping quiet about it but American Airlines has made the official announcement: from 12 August 2012 the agreement between its loyalty program AAdvantage and Gol’s Smiles comes to an end. The details of the agreement had been covered here at D Airfare at Smiles and American Airlines delayed and you can now issue AA tickets with your Smiles rewards.
If you were planning on issuing a reward ticket to fly American with your Smiles credits – or viceversa, 12 August is the deadline. From 13 August you won’t be able to issue any more tickets or accummulate miles flying with the other airline.
It is a huge loss for Smiles, even if it was expected after Delta purchased a share on Gol. In spite of its financial problems American currently operates a great number of flights linking Brazil to the States and the Caribbean. Even if Gol begins operating flights on the route using its own infrastructure or infrastructure borrowed or supported by Delta, and counting Delta’s current offering, the total won’t come near the amount of flights and connections currently offered by American.
